Ham and Cheese Sliders on Hawaiian Rolls Recipe
I started making these ham and cheese sliders during a stretch of busy weeks when cooking needed to be efficient without feeling careless. They were born out of necessity more than inspiration, but over time they became one of those recipes I return to whenever I need something reliable. The combination of sweet Hawaiian rolls, savory ham, melted cheese, and a buttery topping felt familiar in the best way—comforting, dependable, and surprisingly satisfying for how little effort they require.
What I appreciate most about this recipe is its balance. It does not try to reinvent anything, and it does not need to. Instead, it focuses on layering flavors thoughtfully and letting simple ingredients do their work. These sliders have since become a go-to for gatherings, casual dinners, and moments when food needs to bring people together quickly and warmly.
1 package Hawaiian sweet rolls (12 rolls)
¾ pound cooked deli ham, thinly sliced
¾ pound Swiss cheese, thinly sliced
½ cup unsalted butter, melted
1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
1 tablespoon poppy seeds
2 teaspoons dried minced onion
2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
¼ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon pepper
Heat the oven to 350°F. Line a 9×9-inch or 9×13-inch baking pan with foil and coat lightly with cooking spray.
Using a long serrated knife, slice the entire slab of rolls horizontally, keeping them connected. Place the bottom half into the prepared pan.
Arrange half of the ham evenly over the rolls. Layer all of the Swiss cheese on top, followed by the remaining ham. Place the top half of the rolls over the layered filling.
In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the butter until fully liquid. Stir in the Dijon mustard, poppy seeds, dried minced onion, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper until well combined.
Pour the butter mixture evenly over the tops of the rolls, using a spatula to gently spread it so it reaches the edges. Cover the pan with foil and let the sliders rest at room temperature for 5 to 10 minutes to absorb the topping.
Bake the sliders covered for about 20 minutes, or until the cheese has melted through the layers. Remove the foil and continue baking for an additional 3 to 5 minutes, until the tops are lightly browned.
Remove from the oven and allow the sliders to rest for 5 minutes before slicing into individual portions. Serve warm.
Can these sliders be made ahead of time?
Yes, they can be assembled several hours in advance and baked when ready.
Do Hawaiian rolls make a difference?
Their slight sweetness balances the savory filling and is highly recommended.
Can other meats be used?
Turkey or roast beef work well as substitutions.
Why let the sliders rest before baking?
Resting allows the butter mixture to absorb into the rolls for better flavor.
These ham and cheese sliders on Hawaiian rolls are a simple, crowd-pleasing dish built on layers of savory ham, melted Swiss cheese, and a buttery, seasoned topping. Easy to prepare and quick to bake, they are ideal for gatherings, casual meals, and moments when comfort food is exactly what is needed.
