- Gather all ingredients and ensure butter is at room temperature.
- In a mixing bowl, beat butter until smooth and fluffy.
- Gradually add sifted confectioners’ sugar, beating until fully incorporated.
- Mix in vanilla extract until combined.
- Add milk and beat for 3–4 minutes until light and creamy.
- Add more confectioners’ sugar if a stiffer consistency is desired.
- Add food coloring, if using, and beat for about 30 seconds until evenly colored.
- Use immediately to frost cakes or cupcakes.
